The Pursuit of Perfection: A Brother’s Question

Introduction:

A brother once asked another, “How can we be absolutely perfect?”  

Not “better,” not “good enough,” but absolutely perfect.  

It’s a question that pierces through the noise of mediocrity and reaches for the divine.  

But what does perfection mean in the eyes of God? Is it flawlessness? Is it sinlessness? Or is it something deeper?

🎌I.  The Misunderstanding of Perfection

• In the world, perfection is often about performance: flawless execution, no mistakes, no weakness.

• But in the Kingdom of God, perfection is about maturity, wholeness, and alignment with God’s heart.

• The Greek word used in Matthew 5:48 is teleios, meaning “complete,” “mature,” or “fully developed.”

 Perfection in God’s eyes is not about never falling—it’s about always rising again in love, obedience, and humility.

 🎌 II.  The Path to Perfection

Perfection is not a destination—it’s a journey. And here’s how we walk it:

1. Surrender to Grace

🪞 We cannot perfect ourselves. We must surrender to the One who is perfect.

🪞 Christ is our perfection. In Him, we are made whole.

 "Because by one sacrifice he has made perfect forever those who are being made holy." — Hebrews 10:14 (NIV)

2. Walk in Love

• Love is the highest expression of spiritual maturity.

• Jesus said loving your enemies is the mark of perfection (Matthew 5:44–48).

 To be perfect is to love when it’s hardest, forgive when it’s painful, and serve when it’s inconvenient.

3. Embrace the Refining Fire

• Trials are not punishments—they are tools of perfection.

• God uses hardship to shape our character, deepen our faith, and strip away pride.

“Count it all joy… knowing that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.” — James 1:2–4

▶️ Perfection is not pride—it’s humility.

▶️ The truly mature heart says, “I have not already attained, but I press on…” (Philippians 3:12–14).

▶️ We are perfected not by our strength, but by our dependence on God.

So, how can we be absolutely perfect?

Not by striving for flawlessness, but by surrendering to the Perfect One.  

Not by avoiding mistakes, but by allowing God to transform us through them.  

Not by comparing ourselves to others, but by conforming ourselves to Christ.

 Perfection is not a trophy—it’s a testimony.  

 It’s not a status—it’s a spirit.  

 It’s not about being admired—it’s about being aligned.
