Lesson 2: Obedience in Detail | GAIA Bible Studies Project 3
Text: Numbers 20:6–8
Theme: Small deviations can have big consequences
📜 Key Verse:
“Take the rod, and assemble the congregation, you and Aaron your brother, and tell the rock before their eyes to give forth its water, and you shall bring forth to them water out of the rock; so you shall give the congregation and their livestock drink."
(Numbers 20:8, AMP)
🪇 Hymn from Global Canticle
No. 3 (Sec 16): Teach Me Your Ways
Suggested Tune: Beach Spring • Meter: 8.7.8.7 D • Key: G Major
1.
Teach me, Lord, Your ways of wisdom,
Lead me in Your paths of peace;
Let Your Spirit be my teacher,
Let Your truth and grace increase.
Not the wisdom of the ages,
Not the pride of mortal minds—
But the knowledge of Your kingdom,
And the light Your Word defines.
2:
Teach me how to love with justice,
How to walk with holy fear;
How to listen when You whisper,
How to know that You are near.
Let me grow in sacred insight,
Let me walk in heaven’s flame;
Teach me, Lord, Your ways forever,
For the glory of Your name.
3:
Teach me through the trials I encounter,
Through the silence and the song;
Let Your wisdom be my shelter,
When the world feels cold and wrong.
In the shadows, in the sunshine,
Fix my eyes on things above;
Fill my heart with deep compassion,
And the power of Your love.
🎯 Lesson Objectives
By the end of this study, participants will:
1. Understand why precise obedience matters in leadership.
2. Recognize the dangers of altering God’s instructions, even slightly.
3. Commit to honoring God’s holiness by following His word carefully.
🔶 Lesson Outline
1. God’s Clear Instruction (v. 6–8)
☑️ Moses and Aaron fell facedown before God, and His glory appeared.
☑️ God gave a specific command: “Speak to the rock.”
☑️ Obedience requires listening carefully and following exactly.
🍥 Discussion Question
Why do you think God gave such a precise instruction instead of leaving Moses to decide how to act?
2. The Importance of Details
✅ God’s instructions are not suggestions; they are holy directives.
✅ Small changes (speaking vs. striking) can distort God’s message.
✅ Leaders must model careful obedience because others are watching.
🥀Illustration:
A pilot who ignores one small detail in the flight checklist can endanger the whole plane. Leadership requires precision.
3. The Danger of Substitution
🖍️ Moses substituted his own method (striking) for God’s command (speaking).
🖍️ Substitution often comes from frustration, pride, or impatience.
🖍️ Leaders must resist the temptation to “improve” or “adjust” God’s word.
⛎Reflection:
In what areas of your life are you tempted to substitute your own way for God’s way?
4. The Lesson for Leaders
🥢 Obedience is not partial; it is complete.
🥢 Leaders are accountable for how faithfully they follow God’s word.
🥢 True obedience honors God’s holiness and builds trust among His people.
🎈Application:
Commit to following God’s word exactly, even when it seems simpler or easier to do it your own way.
💢 Symbolism & Deeper Insight
🔺 Speaking to the rock: reliance on God’s word and prayer.
🔺 Striking the rock: reliance on human effort and anger.
🔺 The difference shows us that God’s provision flows through faith, not force.
🏖️Enhancements
🎐 Group Activity> instruction: (like folding paper a certain way). Then change it slightly in a different way. Now, discuss how small deviations change the outcome.
🎈 Memory Verse: Matthew 21.21 (KJV)> "Jesus answered and said unto them, Verily I say unto you, If ye have faith, and doubt not, ye shall not only do this which is done to the fig tree, but also if ye shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; it shall be done."
✨Leadership Challenge: Identify one area this week where you will obey God’s word exactly, without alteration.
🎵Closing Hymn
Global Canticle No. 4 (SEC 19): The Peace of the Covenant
Scripture: Numbers 6:24–26
Tune: St. Columba • Meter: 8.6.8.6 (CM) • Key: D Major
1.
The Lord now bless and keep you all,
His face upon you shine;
Within His grace you shall not fall,
Held by His divine love.
His grace be now your canopy,
His light your path attend,
Through all the years that are to be,
Until the journey’s end.
2.
The peace He gives the world knows not,
Shall guard your heart and mind;
In every hour and every lot,
His comfort you shall find.
Though storms may rise and winds may blow,
And shadows veil the sight,
The Ancient Promise starts to show
The way within the night.
3.
He guides the feet of those who wait,
And strengthens every hand;
He opens wide the narrow gate
Across each sea and land.
No longer orphans in the strife,
But heirs of heaven’s throne,
The Giver of the Breath of Life
Shall claim you for His own.
4.
To Father, Son, and Spirit blest,
Be boundless glory given;
Our hope, our shield, our final rest,
The Lord of earth and heaven.
Now go in peace to love and serve,
With fire and holy breath;
The Covenant He shall preserve
Beyond the gates of death.
🧩 Closing Thought
Obedience is not about convenience but about honoring God’s holiness. Leaders must learn that even small deviations can have lasting consequences.
🙏 Closing Prayer
“Father in Heaven, we thank You for Your word that guides us with clarity and precision. We confess that too often we substitute our own ways for Yours, thinking we know better or acting out of frustration. Forgive us for the times we have misrepresented Your holiness by failing to obey You fully.
Lord, teach us to listen carefully to Your instructions and to follow them exactly, even when they seem simple or when we are under pressure. Help us to lead with humility, patience, and faith, so that those who follow us will see Your holiness reflected in our actions.
Strengthen us to resist the temptation of anger, pride, or shortcuts. Remind us that obedience is not partial but complete, and that true leadership honors You above all.
We pray for every leader here today — in families, churches, workplaces, and communities — that they may walk in precise obedience to Your word. May their leadership sanctify Your name before others and bring glory to You. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.”
