Lesson 6: Symbolism of the Rock | GAIA Bible Studies Project III
Text: Numbers 20:7–11
Theme: Christ is the Rock of salvation
📜Key Verse:
“They drank from the spiritual rock that accompanied them, and that rock was Christ.” (1 Corinthians 10:4)
Opening Hymn from Global Canticle
No. 1 (SEC 5): Shout Like David
Scriptures: Psalm 144:1 · Isaiah 54:17
Suggested Tune: Coronation • Meter: 8.6.8.6 D • Key: A Major
1:
I’ll shout like David in the field,
Where giants used to stand.
My praise is more than song or shield—
It’s fire in my hand.
The battle bows before the sound
Of worship rising high.
The walls of fear come crashing down
When heaven hears my cry.
2:
I’ll dance like David in the storm,
Though armies press around.
My worship takes a warrior form,
And shakes the battleground.
No weapon formed shall steal my song,
No shadow dim my flame.
I shout like David, bold and strong—
In victory and shame.
3:
I’ll sing like David in the cave,
When silence fills the air.
My praise will rise, my soul will brave
The weight of dark despair.
For God has trained my hands for war,
My fingers for the fight.
I shout like David evermore—
Till faith becomes my sight.
🎯Lesson Objectives
By the end of this study, participants will:
1): Understand the symbolic meaning of the rock in Israel’s wilderness journey.
2): Recognize how Moses’ actions disrupted God’s prophetic picture.
3): Apply the lesson of Christ as the Rock to their own faith and leadership.
🔱Lesson Outline
1. The Rock as Christ (1 Corinthians 10:4)
🔺 Paul identifies the rock as a symbol of Christ.
🔺 The water flowing from the rock represents spiritual life and salvation.
🔺 Christ is the source of provision, strength, and eternal life.
Discussion Question: How does seeing Christ as the Rock change the way we understand this story?
2. Striking the Rock (Exodus 17)
• God commanded Moses to strike the rock once.
• This symbolized Christ being “struck” once for our salvation at the cross.
• The water flowing represented the life that comes from His sacrifice.
🌊Illustration: Just as one strike released water, Christ’s one sacrifice released salvation for all.
3. Speaking to the Rock (Numbers 20)
🧇 Later, God commanded Moses to speak to the rock.
🧇 This symbolized prayer and faith after Christ’s sacrifice.
🧇 Moses disrupted the symbolism by striking twice, misrepresenting God’s plan.
🛞Reflection: Do we sometimes rely on force or repetition instead of trusting Christ’s finished work?
4. 🪒The Lesson for Leaders
a): Christ’s sacrifice is once-for-all; leaders must not distort this truth.
b): Leadership must point people to prayer, faith, and reliance on Christ.
c): Misrepresentation of Christ’s work undermines God’s holiness.
🍥Application:
This week, focus on leading others to rely on Christ’s finished work through prayer and faith, not human effort.
⚕️Symbolism & Deeper Insight
1): Striking once is Christ’s crucifixion.
2): Speaking afterward equal to ongoing reliance on prayer and faith.
3): The disruption shows how even small acts can distort God’s prophetic message.
🪔Enhancements
Group Activity: Have participants share how they rely on Christ daily — through prayer, Scripture, or faith.
Memory Verse: John 4.14 (NIV): "But whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life."
🎺Closing Hymn from Global Canticle
No. 4 (SEC 16): The Builder’s Song
Scriptures: Proverbs 16:3 · Exodus 31:3–5 · Psalm 127:1
Key: C Major • Tune: Thaxted • Meter: 13.13.13.13
1:
The builder lifts his tools in prayer,
The artist paints with holy care.
The craftsman sings, the farmer sows,
And all creation’s glory grows.
2:
Commit each plan into His hand,
And watch His blessing fill the land.
For every work, both great and small,
Can be a hymn, a praise, a call.
3:
Unless the Lord shall build the frame,
The labor fails, the work is vain.
But when His Spirit guides the way,
The walls resound with songs of day.
4:
So let each task, each stone, each line,
Declare His mercy, love divine.
The Builder’s song shall never cease,
Till earth is filled with heaven’s peace.
Gospel Diary Trickle C (GDT-C)
☄️Declaration:
I declare that Christ is my eternal Rock, the unshakable foundation of my salvation.
☄️Heart Alignment:
I align my heart to trust fully in His strength, not in my own shifting sands.
☄️Prophetic Affirmation
I affirm that my life will stand firm, for the Rock of Ages upholds me through every storm.
☄️Practical Commitment:
I commit to build my daily choices upon His Word, refusing to compromise my foundation.
☄️Short Prayer:
Lord Jesus, anchor me in Your truth, and let my soul rest secure upon the Rock of salvation.
☄️The Seal:
Sealed in Christ the Rock, I stand immovable, unbreakable, and victorious in Him.
🗯️Closing Thought
The rock was more than a source of water: it
was a symbol of Christ. Leaders must honor this truth by pointing people to faith in His finished work, not to human strength or repeated effort.
🌟GAIA MANDATE
Acts.17.31 (NIV) <> "For he has set a day when he will judge the world with justice by the man he has appointed. He has given proof of this to all men by raising him from the dead."
📿Mandate 247 Prayer
“Lord Jesus, You are the Rock of our salvation, the source of living water that never runs dry. We thank You that You were struck once for our sins, and through Your sacrifice we have eternal life. Forgive us for the times we have tried to rely on our own strength, striking in frustration instead of speaking in faith.
Teach us to honor Your finished work by trusting You fully. Help us to lead others to rely on prayer and faith, not human effort. May our leadership always point people to You, the Rock who sustains and saves.
We pray for every leader here today — that they may reflect the truth of Your sacrifice in their words and actions. Strengthen them to resist frustration and to walk in faith, showing others that You alone are the source of provision and life.
Lord, let our lives be testimonies of the Rock that is Christ. May we drink daily from Your living water, and may we lead others to do the same. We ask this in Your holy name, Amen.”
